Tino Tonitini

Ms. Tonitini is Tino's mother. She usually is able to give helpful and insightful advice to Tino about how he should cope with his problems.[1] Her voice is provided by Lisa Kaplan.

Personality[]

In the press kit, Ms. Tonitini is described as a "new age hippie."[2] She is known for her unique style of cooking and unusual meals, which are disliked by Tino and his friends. Indeed, even when she cooks seemingly normal food such as chicken or burgers, the meat comes from rabbits and ostriches respectively. For Halloween, she will instead give out vegetables that look like candy instead of the real thing.

From the beginning of the series, she is divorced, and is shown to not be on good terms with her ex-husband. Ms. Tonitini begins a relationship with Dixon in the episode Dixon (1), and dates him for the remainder of the series. She and Dixon consider getting married in "Testing Dixon," but they decide against it.

Her first name is not given throughout the entire series; even Dixon and her old friend Adele Phipps (who appears in "New Friends") never refer to her by name. Ms. Tonitini's source of income and whether she has a job or not are never mentioned either. She enters a cake made entirely of algae in "Imperfection" and is seen crafting bead necklaces in "Nevermore."

She is also very sarcastic and has a biting wit like her son, especially with Tino when he misses something obvious to the problem or when he gets paranoid. However, Ms. Tonitini is still gentle with her son and tries to guide him in the right direction. They have a close relationship, as Tino mentions in "Cry" that they do ceramic projects and watch movies together once a week.

It's hinted that she divorced her husband because he always put his work before his wife and son and is never around. In a flashback when Tino was young he hang some stockings over the fireplace, one of them was his father's, and this was months after the divorce and he never called to say merry Christmas to his son. Those things upset Ms. Tonitini as Tino is often sad when his dad isn't around. She apologizes to Tino after making a joke at his father's expense that upsets him in "The Worst Holiday Ever,"

After she and Tino's father divorced, they stopped celebrating Christmas and began observing Equinox holidays such as the Vernal Equinox ("Grow Up") and Winter Solstice (“The Worst Holiday Ever”).

Episode Appearances[]

Ms. Tonitini appears in every episode, except for “Throwing Carver”, “Diary”, “To Tish”, “Talent Show” (only her voice off-screen), “Lucky Shoes”, “Tutor”, “Follow the Leader” (only her voice memo from the telephone), “Brain Dead”, “Lor's Will” and “Laundry Day”.
